Huntingdon's Guide to Saturdays Grand National

This Saturday is Grand National day. Still one of the nationals favourite sporting events on the calendar. It is a day when even people who have no interest in horse racing throughout the year will tune it and watch this horse racing spectacle.

I think we love the race so much because it is such an endurance race and it isn't always the best horse that wins, but usually the horse the biggest heart. Its a really test and sometimes a bit of a lottery to pick the winner. Interestingly the first winner of the Grand national back in 1839 was called lottery.

So if you fancy a flutter on a donkey or better still a champion elect where are the best places locally to place that bet? Well S&D Bookmakers on Princes Street or William Hill in Newton Court are the two main bookies in town.

Just in case you are interested I'll be putting my money on Toby Jug if he runs. Toby Jug is our local horse trained by Sarah Humphrey in Cambridgeshire and he is a previous winner at Huntingdon but is a rank outsider at 150/1. We will see.

Incidentally William Hill are doing a money back if the horse doesn't run deal which is a good idea for the Grand National as lots don't end up running.

Do you know of any pubs that will be showing the race live?

Perhaps you would like to give us your big tips for the Aintree race?

Just checked on the BBC website and indeed Toby Jug is not running. He is not one of the 40 runners or three reserves. So you will have to pick a winner from the remaining runners and riders. Good luck! Any tips for the big race gratefully received.

As there is a limit of 40 runners in Saturdays Grand National and I think they keep a few reserves ready I think it is unlikely that Toby Jug will get to run. He is 56th on the list, so quite a few will have to scratch before he is in. From a local point of view I hope he gets in, but I think it is unlikely.
