Darren Bent who attended Hinchingbrooke school and played junior football for Godmanchester Rovers is in the 30 man Squad to prepare for the World Cup finals in South Africa starting in June. The squad will be reduced to 23 by the England Manager Fabio Capello and will be announced on the 1st June after England play friendlies against Mexico and Japan. These games and the training sessions will give the Sunderland Stricker the chance to impress the management team and get himself on the plane to South Africa.

Capello will have to cut seven from the squad to make up the final 23 who will go to the World Cup final with the first game against USA on the 12th June at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg. Currently the odds are against our man being there as he is viewed as one of outsiders to be included in the final selection of Capello. But Geoff Hurst was not expected to play in '66 and he ended up score that hat-trick in the final. So a lot can happen between now and South Africa.

It certainly would add a little extra interest if we had a little extra local interest playing up front.

What do you think?

Ok it's official the Ex-Hinchingbrooke schoolboy and Junior at Godmanchester Rovers is not going to the World Cup. He is one of the unlucky seven left out of Capello's final 23 man squad along with Leighton Baines, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker, Adam Johnson and surprisingly Theo Walcott.

So it's decision day for Darren Bent and I don't think he did enough against Japan to get him into the squad for South Africa. Which is a shame as i would have like to have seen him go to add a little local interest.

Should get official news around 4pm. Will keep you posted.

Unless there are injuries I don't think he has much chance of being in the final squad. Rooney, Crouch, Defoe and Heskey are all ahead of Darren Bent and Joe Cole and Theo Walcott can also play up front.
