Local school children have voted JLS as their favourite pop act in a mock election during Local Democracy Day, held at Huntingdonshire District Council on Wednesday 13 October.

Children from Stukeley Meadows Primary School and Hartford Junior School in Huntingdon attended the event which was aimed at encouraging people to get involved more with local decision making. The children were shown a mock polling station, and the voting process was explained by the council’s elections team. They were able to vote for one of four pop star candidates, who were Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, JLS or Pixie Lott. The voters marked their ballot papers and posted them into a real ballot box. Voting closed and the results were declared shortly after 3pm.

Other activities on the day included demonstrations of online payments from the council’s web team and information from the customer services team. Councillors were also on hand to discuss any local issues and give out details on how to become a councillor. Charities offering information included Parkinson’s UK, St John Ambulance and the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre.

Councillor Jeff Dutton, Chairman of Huntingdonshire District Council said: “The day was a great success. We were pleased to see so many school children come along. They learnt a lot about how elections are run and enjoyed voting for their favourite pop star. We are very keen to get residents more involved in local democracy, and this event has provided us with a great start.”
