"Years of "erosion, neglect and mismanagement" have left many town centres on the brink of extinction, television presenter and retail expert says in wide-ranging review into UK's troubled high streets." - Mary Portas, in today's Telegraph.

That just about sums it up for Huntingdon, that's for sure.

Frankly we get the town centres we deserve, Huntingdon included. If the general public actually wanted small interesting local shops in their town centres then they would have supported them in the past and not let them go bust by shopping in ****geneous, lifeless out of town shopping centres or large supermarkets that offers everything under one roof.

Even in more affluent times most people were only interested in the price an item to them and not the hidden extra costs to the themselves and their community.

You're probably right. But I've yet to see any major local commitment to anything but a clone town, at the cheapest possible price, of course,

And after colluding in sealing off the public access by Wilkinsons, we now have Churchmanor's "Commercial Alley" as the only major thoroughfare between the two still-active parts of the town centre...

    Then there's this:

*cough* She called for curbs on bookies "blighting" high streets *cough*
