Plane Crash on A1 North of Sawtry

The A1 has had both lanes closed after a light aircraft crashed bring electricity lines down at Water Newton north of Sawtry. The crash happened at about 2.15pm the afternoon when a small aircraft is believed to have hit overhead power lines. The plane lost a wing before crashing in to the ground near to Sibson Airfield.

Police have confirmed that the pilot died in the accident and have also said that no other passenger were aboard the plane. Emergency services including ambulances, fire crews and a helicopter were called but the pilot injuries were fatal.

Police closed the A1 both ways between 17 at Haddon and the junction with the A47 near Wansford. The road is expected to be close until at least midday tomorrow.

    The A1 re-opened gain yesterday at about 3pm. The road was closed after a light aircraft crashed hitting a electricity line and killing the pilot. The pilot has yet to be named by police. The road was closed while engineers repaired the electricity cable that spans the A1 at Water Newton.
