Murder Inquiry in St Ives

Police launched a murder inquiry in St Ives after a they were called to a suspicious death at a property in Gainborough Drive at around 10.30am on Thursday (27th October).

A man in his 50s, who also was found at the address with abdominal injuries, was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge for treatment.

After a post mortem examination was carried, police confirmed on Saturday that the case was being treated as murder. The post mortem examination concluded that the woman "died from compression to the neck". She has yet to be formally identified.

A police spokesman said inquiries were ongoing, but it is believed that a 53 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

    John Mearns, 53, of no fixed abode, was charged with the murder of Pauline Smith late yesterday. He appeared before Huntingdon Magistrates Court this morning and remanded in custody to appear before the Crown Court in Cambridge on Monday.

    Mrs Smith, 54, was found dead at her home in Gainsborough Drive, St Ives on Thursday morning.

    The woman in the murder investigation in St Ives has been named as Pauline Smith.

    The 53 year old man who was found with abdominal injuries at the same address in Gainsborough Drive and was taken to Addenbrookes in Cambridge has been arrested on suspicion of murder and will be questioned by police upon his release from the hospital. He has not be named by police as yet.
