Local Seasonal Huntingdon Vegetables

Okay I admit I like watching TV Chef programmes, perhaps more than most, but one thing that tends to annoy me is that they always bang on about using seasonal veg usually without saying what is in season during the various seasons of the year. So I end up not knowing what to use or look for in the supermarkets, or greengrocers (do we still have any greengrocers?). I tend a fall back then on the regular veg stock favourites and don't experiment.

I have also noticed that the vegetables I get from the supermarket don't have very long life span once I get them home. They go off quite quickly and I was starting throw too much stuff away.
So if you are like me and want to use more seasonal vegetables and perhaps experiment with a change from the usual stock veg here are couple of ideas for you.
I have started to get a box of vegetables delivered to my door through a company called Abel and Cole. I order a selection of vegetables for a set price and they send me vegetables that are in season and grown locally (well grown in the UK at least and not vegetables that have more air miles points than I do). They also seem to last longer. You never quite known what you are going to get which is where the fun experiment part comes in and they include recipes for the veg with your box. For example this week we received Purple Carrots, Squash, Cherry Tomatoes, Cosmos Potatoes, Red Cos Lettuce, Romanesco Cauliflower, Spinach and onions.
Of course if you don't want to delivered or want more choice over which veg to get each week then the regular Farmer's Markets in Huntingdon would be a great place to pick up fresh very local produce. Farmer's Markets are held every other Friday in the Market Square next to dates are 11th and 25th November. Details of the farmers market and all dates can be found on the Huntingdon Town Partnership website
There are also farms that sell produce directly to customers around Huntingdon so look out for those. If anyone knows local farms that sell locally, post a note on here and let everyone know about them. Lets start a list. It would be good for local businesses. Think Local!
