Huntingdon and the 3G Mobile Network Coverage

The BBC conducted a 3G mobile network coverage survey in which 44,600 people downloaded an app for the phone which helped the BBC track coverage of the 3G mobile network across the country. The phone companies have claimed 90% plus coverage but we all know places were the network doesn't work.

In my old house in Elsworth to make a normal mobile call (we are not talking 3G here) I had to behalf way up the stairs with my head out of the window. My provider at the time 3 mobile said the standard network should work in Elsworth but it clearly didn't. So, it is interesting to read this latest data on the 3G network. There is a map on the BBC site into which you can pop your postcode to see your area.

The 3G network map does show some identifies black holes in parts of Godmanchester, Stukeley and Brampton. There are also large areas with no data. Much of the no data areas are rural land, which makes sense not to have data but there are large parts of Huntingdon that have no data and may also have black hole in the 3G network.

This all calls into question the mobile phone companies claims of 90% coverage for their 3G networks. The map shows network holes even in part of London. For example there are holes in East Dulwich (South-East London), Leytonstone High Road, Wanstead Park and Barking Road (all East London).

I'm on the 3 network too and yes it is rubbish in Cambridgeshire. Thinking of moving to a different network. Which network has the best coverage locally?
